Gardening for food extends from prehistory. Ornamental gardens were known in ancient times, a famous example is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, while ancient Rome had dozens of gardens. The earliest forms of gardens evolved from the needs of people grow herbs and vegetables. However, many people had in the past meant merely decorative gardens.
